Subject: Won't start - lifter adjustment problem?
Comments: To: Vanagon@VANAGON.COM

I've just finished the head gasket job on my 88 Vanagon. Put in new water pump and new FI lines. Got it all back together and now it won't start. Have fuel from the injectors, spark from the plugs, all ele. connectors connected to the air system. It fires on #1 cylinder but thats it. I rechecked the adjustment on the hydraulic lifters several times - but I think that this is the problem. Here's how I adjusted them - correct me if I am wrong:

1. Backout adjusting screws in rocker arms so that ball shaped end is flush with surface of arm. 2. Turn crankshaft so that #1 is at TDC - also mark on rotor is pointing to distributer mark. 3. Turn adjusting screws in so they just touch valve stems. 4. Turn adjusting screws 2 turns clockwise and tighten locknuts. 5. Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees (COUNTERCLOCKWISE - RIGHT ???) and adjust #2 cylinder. 6. Repeat until all are adjusted. The above came from Bentley.

I'm pretty certain that the pushrods are seated in the lifter. Could air be bound in the lines? Any input appreciated.
