Subject: Three Problems Solved with one hose

Have been having some minor but annoying problems with my '84 GL Vanagon and I think I finally found thier source and remedied the problem. Here was what I was experiencing: 1. Gas leakage after filling the tank all the way up. 2. Intermittant bucking and power loss when the fuel indicator went below a quarter of a tank (got worse as the fuel level decreased). 3. Fuel gauge indicated false fuel level (it was pointing right at the beginning of the orange reserve and the tank was empty.

How I solved these problems: Filled the tank up and felt on top (through the wheel wells) to find out where it was leaking. Found one of the rubber hoses that goes to one of the plastic fuel expansion tanks on the passenger side was leaking the fuel. Replaced the line (old one was hardened and cracked up) with a new one and all three of my problems are fixed. I hope this can help another List member who might be having the same symptoms. I guess the leak was not letting the tank maintain the pressure it needed? Hope this helps somebody. Ken Wilford John 3:16 PS Sorry about that R-12 rumor. I guess it is just another of those urban legends.
