I recently switched to single weight Valvoline oil. I was using 40 W in the spring and I'm using Valvoline 50 Racing oil now. The motor doesn't sound like it's going to explode over 3K anymore. Sincerely,

If you want the straight scoop, ask Castrol. I'd be willing to bet they will tell you the same thing that (most) everyone on the list will tell you:

1) Do what the owners manual says and steer clear of mechanics that tell you they know more than the vehicle manufacturer.

2) (In my experience) 10w40 is too thin for summer use in a VW. Not only does the manual say so, but the low pressure warning system is triggered by the thin oil in warm temperatures. You've gotta use the 20w50 in the summer.
