My experience with people trying to avoid their insurance company has always been bad and I wound up losing as they for some reason try to compromise and negotiate when it comes time to pay. I would recommend two (2) things: 1) get a police report on the incident. 2) get his insurance info and get them happily involved and do not allow them to tell you where to have your vehicle fixed.
