Hello Kurt. I was wondering the same thing when I installed my driveshaft. I took it to mean exactly what you wrote. Index the shaft. Also, the front diff bolts should be loose to remove the shaft. When the shaft is back in, try moving the front diff a bit so things settle in, then tighten up the diff bolts. Worked for me. R.Feuerriegel 88 syncro
