Subject: Shari Lewis Test Site Party: Friday Aug 28
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
You're invited to a party!
My boyfriend and I are attending Burning Man, a Nevada performance-art "city"
held over Labor Day. Burning Man is a big deal, probably attended by about
12,000 people this year, with hundreds of performance pieces or art works.
We are bringing the "Shari Lewis Memorial Shrine, Puppet Theater, and
Martini Bar." Shari Lewis is the puppeteer who created Lamb Chop for
Captain Kangaroo. The shrine provides the materials to create various kinds
of hand-puppets, and perform your own puppet plays. In exchange for
performing a puppet play (of any quality or content) you can get a free
Martini! We will probably videotape many of these plays.
Because the puppet theater will likely be burned (with many other
performance art pieces) at the end of Burning Man, we'd like to have some
fun with it amongst our Bay Area friends beforehand. So, we're having a
party.
Besides, we desperately need props!
Admission to the party is any one or more of the following:
1. a prop. This can be almost anything smaller than a breadbox. Here's
some ideas to get your juices flowing: Barbie dolls, model cars and boats, a
pen, a little paper hat, model cows, a small bra (suitable for fitting
around a wrist), a tiny stuffed animal, etc. You can designate these as
"gifts" or "loans". There's a risk that "gifts" will be burned.
2. Booze, especially gin.
3. Spare socks (for puppets).
4. A written play for puppets. (We don't really expect one of these, but if
you bring one we will jump for joy.)
5. A small torch to borrow for a week. We might have some incendiary puppet
plays outside the confines of the shrine.
At the party, we'll play-test the theater, to see what's fun and what isn't,
and hear your ideas. We'll try out the videocamera. We probably won't test
the torch, though.
Of course, it's mainly an excuse to be silly and carouse. Hope you can
attend. There will be non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, and some munchies.
There's lots of space, even with a huge puppet theater in the living room.
It's a loft.
From 5:30pm to 10pm (maybe later, but who knows)
Friday, August 28
Shari Lewis Test Site
229 8th Street, Unit 4
San Francisco
(415) 241-0815
There's usually a reasonable amount of parking around that area. However,
this is also the night of Critical Mass, meaning there will be bikes
everywhere between about 5pm and 7:30pm.
Hope to see you there!
