There is an article in VW Motoring (January, 1996) about a modified
turbodiesel (a 1.6 turbo, indirect injection) transporter that used a
water-cooled intercooler.  A black box sits about where the air filter
of a non-turbo diesel Vanagon would be.  Two hoses come out of it and go
to/from a radiator at the front of the car.  There is probably an
electric coolant pump in the circuit too.

VW Motoring wrote: "The actual engine modifications consisted of
installing a water-cooled intercooler, with an additional radiator
fitted behind the main one at the front.  The intercooler now sits in
the space originally occupied by the air filter: this was moved to the
off-side, whilst the fuel pump was recalibrated... The exhaust system
had its baffles removed to help expel the gases more effectively... the
engine now felt considerably quicker, cruising quite happily at 100 mph
(on the Autobahns of course!) and yet still returning 35 mpg if driven
carefully..."

The 35 mpg is believable considering the size of Imperial gallons, but I
don't know about the 100 mph.
