My experience with people trying to avoid their insurance company has always been bad and I wound up losing as they for some reason try to compromise and negotiate when it comes time to pay.

I would recommend two (2) things:

1) get a police report on the incident. 2) get his insurance info and get them happily involved and do not allow them to tell you where to have your vehicle fixed. YOU name the shop and get the very best.
