This one is not roof mounted...from what I can see it looks like I've got hoses from the coils in the grill to the left rear of the engine compartment...I've got a T-shaped console on the ceiling in the front with vents...

Since this Vanagon had the auxillary heater too..(which was also removed) I'm not sure if these vents are for air or heat or both...

It looks like the compressor mounts in the left rear of the engine compartment (only real space for one anyway and that is where the hoses lead).

I won't know about functionality until I reinstall if I end up doing this.

It's good to know that the new stuff will work...I imagined there would be some loss of efficiency with a different coolant...but I think I could live with that.

I was mostly interested in how much power I'd loose...The 2 Liter seems okay as it is with the 5 speed manual...but it is a little slow in tight situations...if the air is reinstalled and on does the compressor sap a lot of get up and go?
