Steve, you wrote:

You may have air infiltrating from the (supposedly closed) vents. In our case it's the vents for the foot wells which are the culprits...the foam gasket is long gone, so I get a bunch of unwanted air coming in and a lot of noise as well.

I pulled the cover behind the shifter off and duct taped the floor vents. We live in Atlanta, and can deal with that source of heat shut off more or less permanently, since there's still plenty of heat available through defroster and dash vents as well as the rear heater.

You could also temporarily block the air intake that's under the grill. Of course, that will kill your fresh air source if you don't count open windows which will probably work just fine in Maine. <G>

In addition, a lot of heat comes up through the floor due to heated air through the radiator that's passing underneath the van beneath your feet. I pulled the carpets and underlayment up, and stuck 3/8 inch thick, foil backed insulated padding from JC Whitney on the floor. That's made difference for sure. No more Vanagon Hot Foot Syndrome for us.

One other thing: Make sure that your heater valve is closing all the way. it's located underneath the van, accessible when you drop the the spare tire. my cable kinked there once and I had to get down in there and straighten the thing out.
