Just to expand on this with some of my own personal experience... I have
Every Vehicle I have ever owned in Canada... Rust Checked, every year... it
cost about $100 Cdn = $65us to have done.. the first time it's applied they
drill holes in some hard to reach areas and then insert a long spray rod
and spray all inside, doors (w/windows rolled up), rocker & kick panels,
fenders, then they plug these holes with plastic plugs, and the next time
(usually for me just before the first big snow fall.. early Nov? in my
area) they pop the plugs and spray it again, it's a type of special oil
mixture that displaces moisture and stops corrosion,.... it's NOT WD40...
it's a special mixture.... wd40 attracts moisture, & leaves a light oil...
it's really more of a penetrating oil, good for it's purpose (I use it) but
NOT for Corrosion. I know all this because I produced a commercial for a
competing product and went to their labs and got all the info from the
chemist. A lot of cheap people will not spend that yearly cost to prolong
their vehicle's life.... Here's the bottom line & why I do.... I just sold
a 1989 Nissan KingCab PU 160Km... one owner (me).... the guy who bought
it.. drove up in exactly the same vehicle w/ 240km... his fenders were
hardly hanging on, his tailgate was shot, etc. Mine looked really sharp,
with NO rust... the going price (blue book) & in the used auto mags in our
area was 3 to 4K tops... I was asking 6.5...the guy gladly gave me $6k...
Same story... my last VW 78 Champagne Edition Westy, .. I paid $7k for
it... 10 years later, sold it for $6.... One BIG caveat here... Some of the
Natural Rubber on older vans will really expand when soaked in this kind of
oil mix, be careful how it's applied.... I do not let just anybody spray my
Westy... also.. I have the under side sprayed twice, once with a lighter
mix (that soaks into all seams & cracks) and then a 2nd time with a thicker
darker almost tar like mixture that you let sit for a few hours and then it
gels and forms a more protective layer... Our 2 most worst winter Enemies
on Canadian Highways are Sand... it just blows the finish off anything, and
then the Salt (which really isn't table like salt (that's another story)
which is really a cheap corrosive chemical, and in lots of areas these two
are mixed together and spread at the same time. So you want to make your
vehicle retain some of it's equity?... Don't drive when the roads are wet
with salt & sand after a storm... wait if you can until they are dry... and
get Rust Checked at least every other year.
