I agree with you totally. I went through the same search experience while
I was trying to replace my factory MXL. I think Michelin 205/70R14 MXT
Reinforced is simply the BEST tire for Vanagon with max. load of 1709 lbs
at max. pressure of 50psi.

I disagree. I searched for tires a while back and couldn't find ANY tires
to
match the specs of the Michelin MXT tires. I seqarched TireRack's website,
made a bunch of phone calls and visited a number of tire dealers. My 88
van
came with the alloy wheels and 205/70R-14 tires and I didn't want to settle
for a 20mm narrower tire like a 185.
I found lots of tires with only 1433 pound rating. A few with a bit higher
ratings. Most could only handle 35 PSI, less than the recomended pressure
for
a Vanagon with this size tire. The Michelin MXT was the ONLY 205/70R-14
tire I
found this a 1709 lb rating and 50psi max pressure.
If you know others, the list would benefit from knowing about them.
