VW once published a brochure that warned the VW owner about the fuel usage. It stated that certain brand of gas will cause clogged fuel injectors and carbon build-up on intake valves. It did recommended Amoco (no longer in retail business?), Shell and Chevron. I used to pump Chevron gas most of time and pour in the Techron occasionally. Lately I'm using any major brand gas and a new product call "RXP" which can be found at Chief and Kwik Lubs. Of course avoid the RFG (Reformulated gasoline) if you can. If you check the owner's manual of the older cars, it will say DO NOT USE any gas which contains MTBE (the major additive of RFG). The RFG contains 10 - 15% of MTBE which not only harden your rubber parts but also worsen your gas mileage (only 85% of the RFG are "real" gasoline). MTBE is also contaminating our precious ground water too. Regards, Yi-Ruey Wei 87 Vanagon GL Syncro w/78K miles 85 Jetta GLI w/165K miles Dallas, Texas (It finally rained)

Please respond to David-M <dmc@CYBURBAN.COM> To: Vanagon@VANAGON.COM cc: Subject: Vanagon fuel requirement

I just read my water-cooled Vanagon owners manual and there is a quite lengthy section on fuel requirements. Do I understand correctly that 87 octane fuel is correct for this vehicle? Also, the manual goes to great length to talk about gasoline additives and says that some brands are better than others in this respect, but of course mentions no particuler brand. Apparently the important factors are protection against carbon build-up on intake valves, and keeping the fuel injectors clean. Has anyone researched this subject and come up with the best brand of gasoline for the Vanagon?
