Subject: Update on Cupholders (Dash console)

A while back I posted that I had some dash consoles on order from Germany. When they arrived, I tried to stick one on a '87 Vanagon Westy, and there was no way it would fit.

Well this past weekend at BBTA, I got to try it on a couple of different year Vanagons and found that it will fit on a 1980, and 1982 model. If your dash is the same as one of those years, it will fit yours as well. This cupholder is molded plastic and takes up your whole dash from the speaker grill over (to the right). There are tabs on the sides that have double stick tape to hold it in place. You may need to trim 1/4 inch off of one of the tabs to get it fit if you have a plastic grille over your speaker holes. The cupholder is clearly made for this application, through the bottom of the cupholders are still at a slight angle when the console is installed and your Vanagon is sitting level.

It does look good in place, but personally I am not real impressed. P-mail me if you are interested in trying one out. The cost is $20 plus $3 shipping, and I'll take it back if you don't like it. I only have 5, and I may not order more depending on how well they are liked.

I do have a different model arriving this week. This looks very similar to the stock? cupholders I've seen, except it has a fold out map table with it as well. I will post again in a few days after I get a chance to try it out.

If you want to see a pic of the air-cooled Vanagon cupholder, go to: http://members.aol.com/tentinfo/page14c.html

The cupholder is upside down in the picture, (holes for cups should be on the left side closer to the driver) and the description is clearly wrong, listing T2 from 1979-1990, unless of course the German T2 has a different dash.

Glad the list is back up.
