Yes, the combustion chamber is meant to be sealed. This is straight from the horse's mouth (Dometic technical support, I called them). My combustion chamber had four holes drilled into the bottom by some qualified (?) service technician during a previous service call sometime in the past. I also found three flat metal washers sitting in the bottom of the chamber! Needless to say, I will be doing the service myself, henceforth! Servicing the fridge is not that difficult.

If you can't locate the clear plastic cylinder for the sight hole, simply seal the hole in the fridge to prevent cold air from escaping because the sight hole doesn't work that well anyway. It's no big loss and won't affect the propane operation.
