Susan,

I had a similar problem which I diagnosed as a corroded/broken female connector.at the ground location above the fuse panel in my 84 Westy. Disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid shorting and remove the two screws holding the fuse\relay panel under the left dash. Feel for a five or six point ground and check/seat condition of connectors. See the Haynes or Bentley schematic for details, if you have either book. My situation drove me nuts until my wife diagnosed it.
