I do the same with my non-VW vehicle. I always fill the tank then zero the trip counter. Then I know I have a safe 200 miles to go. In my experience (with many vehicles) the fuel gauge is one of the most unreliable of components and inevitably very expensive to have fixed because of the diagnosis involved and the inaccesibility of the parts.
