Just wanted to mention it for the list's information.

A while ago I mentioned that my '80 Vanagon wouldn't start...all of a sudden and nothing.

I researched the troubles related to starting and found a few which several of you emailed me...

Turns out that after I replaced the electronic part of the ignition switch and the starter w/solenoid I gave in and took it to my mechanic.

It turned out that the mechanical part of the switch just wasn't engaging the electronic part far enough anymore...just worn...after they put a new one in they still had to replace the metal steering lock collar it goes into also. Between the two there was enough play to keep the little flange from turning the electronic component far enough to start.

I never would have figured this out...around $95 for both parts plus labor but it just wasn't something that I would have thought of.

Go figure...anyway, now I've got a new starter and switch so things should be dependable for another 18 years.
