My gauge must be different than yours. Mine when cold is full ccw... as it warms up it moves cw. When I had the wasserboxer it was just past the warning light, now with the Audi 2.0L it is always just before the light. This could be the different thermostat sender or perhaps the engine just runs cooler.

The best way to check you gauge is to take the lead off of the sender... it should go to the home position, then ground it and it should go the the full position.
