Subject: Stretch update and tach signal?

The stretch is running well now (on Gas only), aside from the diesel gearing (my aircooled tranny blew up). It has over 3000 miles in the three weeks since it was stretched, it's been to Portland as well as Burning Man and I just got back from Big Sur. The tranny was replaced in the early morning on a levee in Davis on the way to BM. :-\.

It's gotten a name: "Power of two" in addition to the usual "Stretch"

I tried hooking up the tach signal from the ECU of the 97 Jetta to the tach wire from the 86 syncro front. It doesn't work. When I put a scope on the signal into the tach I see a reasonable 12V square wave with a some noise but it seems that the vanagon tach needs more than that. I know the vanagon tach is supposed to connect to pin 1 of the coil. Unfortunatly pin 1 on the Jetta coil is not so easy to get to (though I may end up soldering something in there).

Has anyone figured out how to make a vanagon tach trigger on a simple 12V signal like many other tachs do?
