I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this question, but:

I have an '82 air-cooled Vanagon, California spec. It is an Adventurewagen conversion, and has been upgraded with a 2.2L stroker engine for a bit more power. I have had to go through the engine several times since I've owned this vehicle (about 10 years), due to the van's weight and the need to "push" the engine when attempting grades.

I'm on my third, and hopefully final, engine job now, having decided to replace the stock 2L powerplant with a 2.2L stroked, hi-output aftermarket engine from Mark Stephen High Performance. Everything will be stock, except for displacement, cam profile, and a slight improvement in breathing due to porting/polishing. I will have to have it smogged when I put it back on the road after the current engine rebuild.

Does anyone know where I can find the EGR filter/pipe that runs between the left heat exchanger and throttle body? Mine is rotted away, and I have not been able to find a good one. Alternatives to using the stock item are welcome, too.

Also, a general question:

I am thinking of trading my '82 in for a later water-cooled Van, possibly a Synchro. Any recommendations as to best years to shoot for? I understand that the 2.1L later engine is superior to the 1.9L earlier one, but I don't know much beyone that. Also, I hear/read about head gasket failures, and expensive engine rebuilds.

Thanks in advance!

Dan
