Subject: Syncro Front Axel Nut Research

Ooops mistake in previous post on pricing, it is $11 per 10 nuts, not $11 per 100 sorry.

===============================================================

It appears that ever time you take the front axels out of a syncro to do work up in front there the factory says you have to change that self-locking nut that holds the axel shaft into the front wheel bearing.

This nut carries a specification Metric size 20, threadpitch 1.5, part number N 100 853 01, category 8, DIN 980, with a C35 finish.

In McMaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com) I see they sell such a nut on page 2625 at $11 per 100 nuts, a good deal for a syncro owner if I ever heard one. They carry a specification of "DIN 980-V, Class 8 zinc plated Steel." But the McMaster Carr nuts have a threadpitch of 2.5, not the required 1.5. So we need a source for these nuts.

Do other syncro owners really throw these nuts away every time they take them off the car?

Does anybody know an alternate source for the nuts in the correct size? ________________________________________________________ Derek Drew New York, NY & Washington, DC drew@interport.net '90 Syncro Westfalia... ...seen off-road at http://www.tiu.net/~des/vw/drew/index.html
