Hi, Mark,

In my humble opinion, the 1986-1991 Vanagons were the best ever made. The first water-cooled version came out in 1983.5 and continued through the 1985 model year. The 1983.5-1985 models CAN be great, but it is MUCH more tricky to find a good one. In 1986 VW came out with a completely re-designed engine (water-cooled design from start, larger displacement, 15 HP more & about the same gas mileage). LOTS of people (mechanics, mostly) suggested I buy a 1986-91 Vanagon when I was looking for my Westfalia.

You can find some (more and better) information at: http://www.busdepot.com/campers.htm

Good luck!

Marty Wallace (1984 Westfalia) Chico, California
