I have a lifter that has come apart iside the engine of my 87 Vanagon GL. The pushrod was trapped between the lifter bore wall and the pushrod cup that had detached from the lifter. I removed the pushrod with vise grips, and found that the lifter bore has a burr on it as well. I would like to replace the lifter and pushrod, and tube without removing the engine.

My question is: Has anyone ever removed a lifter without dropping the engine?
