In an past issue of VWTrends, there were an article of Neuspeeds 97 VW Passat TDI, and while they wrote that the TDI didnt seem so quick as they thought it to be, it was they di not know how to drive it. With maximum torque at 1900rpm, you should shift gear at 2500rpm, because it accelerates on the torque, not the horsepower. They also tested it on the highway against a VR6 Passat, and in the 50-70 mph, 5th gear acceleration test, the TDI was (supposedly) quicker. Ive never personally driven a VR6 driven VW, but had the chance to drive both Golf and Passat with TDI, I am willing to believe it.
