On our 90 Westfalia, the previous owner had mounted gimbaled cupholders (from a marine supply, I think) on the black plastic heater duct/cover (under the dashboard, in front of the shift lever, and although the particular cupholders don't fit all cups, it's not a bad location. To use the folding type of cupholder in that location, you would need to add a wedge of wood behind the cupholders to make them level, I think. On our 87 Wolfsburg, the factory-standard front cupholders are on the inside wall of the passenger's seatbox (opposite the handbrake lever). This is the optimal location to be stepped on/spilled frequently on trips as the passenger walks to the rear of the van, but if nobody is moving about it's fairly convenient for driver and passenger. I installed rear cupholders for our westy at the back end of the stove/refrig cabinet, and on the outside wall at the passenger side of the rear seat. If you install a cupholder on the stove/refrig cabinet, be sure to position it so that the forward storage cabinet door can clear it as it lifts up.
