The 5 speed option was introduced for the second model year for Vanagon Westfalia Diesels in the US -- that is 1983. I tried to buy a 5 speed in 1982, but was told that the model run for US standard vehicles in Hannover wouldn't begin until after the August shutdown an reconfiguration. The first vehicles were scheduled for Westfalia in late September. We took delivery of our 4 speed in late July of 82 at Weidenbruk. I drove a 5 speed here in California in April of 1983 and was very disappointed because the third was too low and fourth was too high. For the minimal power of the diesel, the 4 speed was actually a better choice. However, with a gasoline 1.8L or 2.0L in-line 4 conversion, the five speed would be a real improvement.
