Scott,

As mentioned by one member, it may be just the nut behind the oil filter. However, the gasket behind the oil cooler will also go eventually on your '86. Usually in the winter time when it gets real cold. The gasket has been replaced by a newer version.

The gasket is easy to replace after taking off the oil cooler. But in removing the oil cooler there are several small hoses that are probably getting old and stiff and may crack. In working the hoses off the cooler mine cracked. But I didn't know that until the ride on the turnpike!!!

Recommendation; sometime soon replace the gasket and the hoses to the cooler. The hoses are not real fun to replace. It is tight in there!

Is this thing difficult to replace or re-gasket? TIA > > Scott De Santi > 86 Vanagon (Faith) aka The Money Pit >
