Musta been napping and let one slip by here!! I have been busy over on the Split-window Type 2 list with questions about a 'freeway flyer' gearbox.

Gary Shea replied to Chris W's plea for help....

<< From the sound of the tranny, it's the standard 3/4 problem which Todd Hill describes here from time to time. I'm sure he'll use better terminology than I can, and be more accurate, but anyway, yep, it's broke, and I doubt there's nothing you can do but take it in to get rebuilt. Ouch. But hey, Todd is in California too...>>

Actually I kinda like the 'its broke' terminology used here. However, I'm not in Cally. I'm a bit north of there but you wouldn't know it from all the transplants. I'm in Olympia, WA- about 65 miles south of Seattle.

<< The tranny sucks though, and will probably require you to find a used one or get the trashed one rebuilt. >>

Yep, from what I have read here the trans is more than likely toast. Sorry about that. Good luck with finding a good used one as they all had the same sucky components from VW to begin with. The new updated 3rd/4th hub seems to be doing its job, though. I haven't had one yet that came back with the new style hub cracked. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Todd Hill VolksWerks Transaxles Olympia, WA
