Mark -- The external wiper arm fits onto a splined shaft. Probably due to not tightening it down enough, I managed to strip a wiper arm and saw something similar to what you have, but it was a gradual process. Sounds more like something's come loose between the motor and the wiper arm in your case... but it's been so long since I've looked in there... Bentley shows a couple of 'relay rods', so it's possible that one of those has somehow popped off...
