Subject: motor mounts broken?
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Friends,

with the purchase of our new (1982) Westy, I am somewhat out of the "information-providing" business on the list, and into the "information- seeking" mode...bur wit me, ahm larnin'.

Our vanagon "seems" to have broken rear motor mounts, I'm not sure though, and I have three questions: 1) Do you hear a significant change in the vibration/noise/loudness in the motor when accelerating versus decelerating? Our has a low "growl" in the body while accelerating, and is VERY quiet whilst decelerating/gently maintaining speed. The motor also makes a "thunk" when turned off, as if settling without being damped. Normal?

B) Does your gearshift move a half inch or so when accelerating/decelerating? That just doesn't seem right to me, but I've never had a Vanagon.

III)Can these mounts be replaced with the motor in? Looks *possible*, just like on our loaf. I know on the loaf it meant pulling the muffler, back tin, fan and housing; then it was a cinch. Is this the same?

I've eyeballed the mounts and slid under the Van for the "wife-in-the-van- with-motor-running-and-gently-let-the-clutch-out-while-in-second-gear" test" and they looked okay, but still all of the above wierdness. Verdict?

Thanks for the help, sorry to be so needy all of a sudden.
