It is my understanding that the Diesel Vanagon that was available for one year only here in the States (1982) did not use a Waterboxer 091-1 based 094 5 speed but used something completely different based upon the '80-'83 aircooled 091s. The 091-1s did not show up here until the introduction of the watercooled Vanagon which was available starting with the 1984 models here. My Bentley also shows the 094 but it is a 091-1 based gearbox which, while looking somewhat similar, is a completely different animal. Perhaps VW stuck something in the 1982 Vans that was only really available overseas for this very limited production run for the States? Its well known that we here in the States got the bland stuff while those in other countries tended to get the 'good' stuff. I must admit my memory is a bit vague when it comes to the Diesel only 5-speed as I have not seen one in years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Todd Hill VolksWerks Transaxles Olympia, WA
