Registering a Vanagon in Arkansas is under $25, I think. We have to pay property tax on the value of the vehicle in addition to that before we get the new year sticker. Not sure what that totaled up to last year.

In Iowa, it's big time expensive unless they've changed the laws. My parents in 1967, paid like $70 for a pretty new Chrysler station wagon. My beetle was $20 or so. Multiply all that by cost of living and you see what i mean.
