I was at a pick a part wrecking yard looking at a 84 vanagon that still had the brain in it (no motor or trans). I know it is not air-cooled as yours--but the # 's on the brain are: 025 906 021

0 280 000 501 The van was not wrecked and the way the wires were removed and not cut off the motor made me think that the motor was removed for a rebuild, to be installed later, but it never happened. I can get the box with the harness for $25 (no warranty from the wrecker). If this will not work for you and anyone else is interested--let me know. I know the later brain boxes are in demand---but I do not know about the older style.

Garth
