I bought my 87 GL new without radio (didn't want to pay the $480 option.) I then bought a Blaupunk Denver receiver/cassette ($260 in 1987). I also bought the optional conversion harness which converts the funny sockets (power and speakers) in chassis of the Blaupunk Denver to the equally but different funny plugs already in dash behind the radio blank space. Installation was a breeze. The fuse was an in line fuse and is part of the conversion harness.

A few month ago, because of my kids demand for playing CD in the van, I bought a Blaupunk Madison receiver/CD($149 in 1998) to replace the old on. This model came with the fuse built into the chassic of the receiver and it comes with the proper sockets for the VW cars.. so no conversion harness was required and no external fuses was required.
