I thought that there was some engineering relationship between the
Subaru and the
VW flat fours. I remember hearing somewhere that various automakers have
sold design documents
and tooling to Japan at various times for various reasons. One that
sticks in my mind
is Mercedes > Nissan(nee Datsun).
