------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I experienced this problem with my '86GL some years back. The door began opening while traveling -usually when I would hit a bump or something. I realized that it started shortly after -while in a fit of rage- I had slammed the door. After fiddling with the latch pin for several months with little improvement I finally went to a salvage yard and bought a new(old) latch assembly. The assembly is easy to replace. If I remember correctly I was able to replace it without even removing the interior door panel. The old latch housing was bent a bit such that it would not fully grab the latch pin. The unit isn't very robust and appears to be susceptible to this type of failure. It has been probably 4 years since I replaced the latch and the door has not spontaneously opened since. I am more careful when closing the door now... I walk away from my fragile old van when angry!
