The 16V or even a highly modded 8V is not a good choice, you want the power on low. 8V - 2.1L wasserboxer 90hp@5500 117ft/lb@3200 8V 1.8L 86-88 GTI/GLI 102@5250 110@3250 8V - 2.0L 93-98 G/J/Cab 115hp@5200 135ft/lb@2600 16V 1.8L 86-89 G/J/S 123hp@5800 120ft/lb@4250 16V 2.0L 90+ G/J/P 134hp@5800 133ft/lb@4400 As you can see the 2.0L 8V has more torque than a 2.0L 16V! Toque is where it is at! The 1.8L 8V is more or less the same as a wasserboxer for power... you want power down low especially for a Syncro. This is why Turbo Diesel is so common on the 16" Syncros - TORQUE and down very low as compaired to any gasoline engine. 8V 1.9L TD 75hp@4200 111ft/lb@2400-3400 8V 1.9L TDI 90hp@4000 149ft/lb@1900 The 1.8L on your garage floor would be perfectly suited for a Rabbit or Scirocco where it is light and the gearing lends towards revving it to readline...
