I would be carefull about removing the stock emissions equipment. It used
to be true that removing it would increase your performance, but now with
the computers in cars the emissions become an important part of the
engine. Without them, you may actually cause more problems than you
solve. Of course this applies to newer cars, since maybe the late
eighties, but it is a good idea to leave stuff where you find it.
As an example, I have a good friend with a '98 Firebird. It runs 13.9 in
the quarter mile, gets 24 (carefully, in 6th gear) on the freeway and
pollutes about 1/100th of what my old '74 Bus did. Emissions doesn't
always equal poor performance. Any problems that you blame on the
emissions probably originated somewhere else.
