The problem as I understand it is the location of the starter -- the adapter
plate is expecting the starter at a different position than on the
wasserboxer-syncro. Apparently, the diesel-syncro is in the correct position.
Hence the need for the diesel-syncro gas tank (which has room for the starter)

This problem only occurs if you try to use the diesel BELLHOUSING. If you
use an adpater plate, you would use the wasserboxer bellhousing as the
adpater plate is designed to take the bolt pattern on the specified engine
and mate it with the bolt pattern on the bellhousing you wish to use. Since
you continue to use the waterboxer bellhousing, the stater remains in its
current position - thus you don't need the gas tank with the notch in it.
Usually, the use of an adapter plate requires a matching flywheel specific to
the engine/adpater plate/bellhousing configuration. I don't know if the
Eurospec kit has a custom flywheel. I should also mention that all my
knowledge of the kit arises from the conversion I had with Kyle while
poking about the thing ;) I don't know the company, and am not part of it...
Ok, back to the issue at hand. If you want to use the diesel bellhousing so
you can use a VW flywheel (and keep your conversion as more or less an
amelgamation of stock vanagons) you would need to import the gas tank as
the diesel bellhousing locates the starter at high noon...

Can anyone clarify this for sure????
