David,

I need all the help I can get, so I have the Bentley, the Haynes, the despised Chilton (Vanagon section Xeroxed illicitly at the the Community Library) and the ALLdata-CD. For the $25 that it cost, it is a reasonable supplement to other sources of information. Much of it is generic automobile repair information. For a DIYer, I'd suggest, first, the Haynes, from either busdepot.com, at about $20.00, as I remember the price, or from Haynes in the UK via WWW site (from which I obtained my copy before Ron Salmon stocked them) at about $40.00 as I remember the price. Haynes holds your hand. Bentley presumes that the reader is a well-trained mechanic an/or VW dealer shop with all of the VW-recommended tools. Chilton? Well, it helps, too.
