My guess is that your Vanagon has a computer that has gone bad. There has been much discussion on this list about the computer problem - check the archives. If you do attempt to locate a replacement (a la junkyard or parts dealer) I believe that the computer for the automatics is different than for standard transmission. Computer is located under rear bench seat.
