My solution is pathetically primitive but works:

When you do fill, zero the odometer (trip mileage counter).

When you're going to fill, divide the new odometer mileage by 20 (8.25 if
you're speaking metric). That's about how many gallons (liters) you're
going to receive.

When you're about one gallon (3.875 liters, to be exacting) shy, take the
filler off of automatic, i.e. hold the filler and the trigger yourself.
Even at a fast rate it somehow clicks off magically just before the splurge.

Metric users might wish to slow the flow down at mileage/10 liters.

Works for me in all three NAFTA languages.
