Subject: '84 clutch judder

Help!

I have an '84 Westy w/ 170k (miles) and am getting about 10k on a clutch (third go-around). First one went about 80,000 -- replaced disk, plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing. Second one replaced at 12,000, included a flywheel this time. Third time, dealer out of ideas, just did the standard stuff. Ready for the fourth one now. (!)

Symptoms are: Everything silky-smooth when first replaced. Within a month or so, start feeling a very slight vibration in the pedal. After a while slight juddering begins on rare occasions (more on that below), then gets progressively noticeable until it's routine and severe by around 12000 -- coincidentally the limit of the dealer's warranty. Seems to be worse in reverse and possibly when turning a corner; definitely worse on hills, of course.

All of this is strongly affected by temperature, and I believe it's the transmission temperature that counts. In cold weather all is smooth; but not in hot weather. An hour or so on the highway will aggravate it, and shutting it off and waiting ten minutes after that will make it worse. I haven't seen the motor while this is happening, but it sounds/feels like it's about to jump out of the box.

Any thoughts? Dealer particularly puzzled by it being worse in hot wx, he expects the opposite.

Thanks and regards, david
