In my humble opinion:

This is a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

I LOVE my 1984 Westy - mostly because I like to CAMP, and I don't run into much foul weather here in California. If I had my preference, I would have a 1986-91 Syncro Westy... *sigh*

If you are interested in hauling several passengers and gear through bad weather, the Syncro can't be beat.

However, if you really just want to camp and don't need to haul more than a few folks at a time, the Westy is the way to go.

To further complicate matters, the 1982 diesel and the 1986 have RADICALLY different powerplants - I think that the 1986 will develop something like TWICE the power of the 1982 diesel. Of course, the diesel may deliver longer, lower cost service...

Good luck! Let the list know what you ultimately decide.

---original message--- In the last week I have been offered a 1982 diesel Westi and a 1986 Syncro at what I feel are great prices. My problem is I need an opinion from the list about the vans, both need motors. Drrufo SOCal-81 vanagon(maybe changing soon)
