Ummm, the engine compartment of a Vanagon is not even close to "enclosed."
The big hole at the bottom of the compartment would probably negate the
desired effects.  Boat engine compartments are enclosed to the point where
no outside light can get in them, a Vanagon/Type2 engine compartment ain't
even close.
