I just changed my alternator on my 81, to make my task easier( what a joke) I removed everything on that side of the motor that came off easy. After putting it back together I forgot to plug in the AFM, it ran better except for a little black smoke. Anybody got any ideas about this? Should it have run at all, should the idle and revs be smoother/crisper with it unplugged? As a comment only the Germans would have designed a car where it takes an almost complete dissasembly of the motor just chamge a fan belt, my arms should heal in a few weeks.
