As Bill says, keep anything that *looks* like food out of sight. The other day a car was totalled in Yosemite because the ownre unpacked his Coleman ice chest into the bear box, and then put the ice chest "away" in the back seat of his car. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Bears can READ. "Coleman" and "Igloo" are their favorite words.

Once, we parked next to a big Chevy Suburban. A bear ripped the door off 'cause the guy used an empty Campbell's Soup can as a catch-all on his dash (I guess he was making an Andy Warhol statement). Things that LOOK like food or smell like food attract bears, but most cars in Yosemite smell like food to bears, so sight appears to be more important in the valley. The bear did not bother using the door he ripped open to exit -- he simply ripped open another, so this guys urban assault vehicle was *really* trashed.

Have fun camping.
