If you are mechanically inclined, VW makes( or use to make) a kit you could
buy for about $150 and put in the power steering rack. I got one and put it
in mine on my '85 GL.. I did the R&R. Saved me a bunch. Local VW dealer ship
wanted $800 for a rebuilt unit and 400 to R&R it.

You probably will have to replace your power steering pump as well. I did.
Thats where the groaning comes from.

Found out the other day that I'm leaking power steering fluid (a few extra
stains in the driveway and a moaning noise when I turn.) Anyone know of a
good place to buy a new or rebuilt power steering rack? Are there any
additives out there that may slow down the leak? My garage made a few calls
and couldn't find any and said they go for about $800. When I got off the
floor I told him I'd look around myself.  He said a rebuilt would be fine
and save a few bucks.  I had a bad experience with Parts Plus so I won't
deal with them anymore... Thanks... -Mike
