I had an interesting sighting this weekend. It was a Vanagon looking vehicle but with lots of gak hanging off it. There were many external wire mesh racks and a huge snorkle like air intake by the front passenger door. The intake is just like those seen on semi trucks. Absolutely huge. The model badge on the back of the vehicle said "LT28" instead of Vanagon. It had an Adventurewagon treatment (fixed fibreglass high top instead of pop top). There was some writing on the front indicating it was from Switzerland and was a "team" vehicle. It was very unusual looking.

I also test drove a TDI Beetle. I have also driven the 2.0 litre gas version. I really liked the TDI. Although it doesn't pin you back in your chair it is very spirited. It, like other TDI VWs I have driven, is geared very high. I had no trouble maintaining 160 kph on the highway. All this with excellent fuel economy and a Cdn$23,000 price tag (US$15,000) including the TDI and a power windows/mirrors/door package. Tons of leg and head room (I am 195 cms - 6'5"). The stock 16 inch wheels with Michelin MXV4 tires offered incredible handling and road holding. I especially liked the lack of a cigarette lighter and the presence of 2 - 12 volt sockets (cigarette lighter sockets with cover). There are no diesel quirks with this motor. For example, the glow plugs are activated by inserting the key in to the ignition. Very slick! There was more engine noise from the TDI than in the Jetta & Passat but it is still quiet for a diesel. If I was in the market for this type of vehicle I would buy one in a second.
